Buying the gun barrel - Pick the barrel that suits your needs
You have to ask yourself a few questions before buying a barrel. Are you going for tactical duty rifle, are you going for precision, or for long range shooting? Three important factors of a barrel are length, gas system length, and twist rate. Longer barrel allows pressure to form behind the bullet and increases the velocity of a bullet. Twist rate affects the stability of a bullet - heavier bullets need greater twist rate. Some common twist rates of AR15 barrels are 1:7, 1:8, 1:9, 1:10. So if you use greater caliber and heavier bullets you will get greater twist rate. For instance, if you use .224 caliber and 45gr ammo you will go for 1:12 twist rate barrel. If you use 90gr ammo and the same caliber you will go for 1:7 twist rate barrel. Longer gas tube makes the shooting softer.
What was the original barrel length of AR rifle?
The M16 rifle, as the successor of AR rifle, was built with a lightweight 20-inch barrel which met mil-spec.
What is the barrel twist rate?
Twist rate represents the ratio between the number of rotations and the length of the barrel. So, when you see 1/9 twist that means one rotation for every nine inches of barrel. Accuracy depends on bullet caliber, bullet weight, and barrel twist rate.
What does the term ‘keyholing’ mean?
When the bullet strikes the target, it should make a round hole. In some cases, that hole looks like a key. That indicates that the bullet travels unsteadily through the air. That instability might be caused by inappropriate bullet weight, and twist rate, damaged barrel or muzzle device.
